What warranty do I get on the windows or doors, and on the installation work?
A new window or door usually has two warranties. The maker covers the product, and the installer covers the work. Ask if each one covers labor or only parts, and if glass breakage is covered. Some warranties need regular maintenance to stay valid. Read the warranty before you buy and keep it with your receipt. 10 years on our installation labor. Windows and doors also carry the maker's own warranty. 1 year on parts and labor for repairs.
How do I choose a good window and door company, and what should I ask them?
Check the licence or registration your area needs. Each state or county sets the rules. Ask for proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance, and call past customers. In a home built before 1978, the EPA lead rule covers most work that disturbs paint. Window replacement cannot use the small-repair exemption. Some homes and lead-free parts are excluded, so ask EPA or your state program. Certification comes from EPA or an EPA-authorized state program. EPA recommends that you hire a lead-safe certified firm. We are EPA Lead-Safe certified. Get a written contract with dates, total cost, payment schedule and every promise. Do you take away the old windows, and is trim work, painting and cleanup included?
It depends on the company. Removal of the old units and cleanup are sometimes part of the labor price and sometimes a separate charge. Repairs to trim, siding or drywall can add to the cost.
